NEA Task 4 : Research Into An Existing Bauer Film Magazine (Empire)

 Empire magazine call themselves 'the world's most influential film and entertainment brands' as they have a print magazine published monthly, a podcast based on the same information that they put into their magazines and they also have a website where customers can find the digital edition of the magazine. Empire are known for collaborating with big film studios and distributors to get interviews with actors and film makers to publish within their magazine. Some interviews with celebrities include: Tom Cruise, Ryan Reynolds and many others. Empire also say that they have world-class writers and photographers to provide only the best content in their magazine so that they can leave a good impression on the customer so that they come back to eventually buy more copies of their magazine every month.

The general readership for Empire magazine is three quarters male who are aged 18-40 and are employed, in a relationship and university educated. By targeting this audience this allows Empire to have an audience who are passionate about films which would further allow them to have an audience who are actually interested in the content that Empire publish. Empire also try to build an audience who are influencers within their groups of family and friends so that they can influence family members or friends into seeing a movie that perhaps appeared in an edition of the Empire magazine.

Empire try to include lots of different things within their magazines to stay engaging with the audience and also be innovative with their new ideas for what to do with their magazine and company. And by being engaging with their audience and coming up with new ideas this allows Empire to have some of the biggest firsts in the film and entertainment world. Empire also include lots of 'On-Set' content which is where they visit a set for a new film to provide exclusive content to their readers that other magazines cant offer with their lack of connections in the film making industry. Empire also include lots of A-Lister celebrities in their magazine as they have interviews with some of the biggest names in the film industry. And finally Empire also have authority in their content which means that they are passionate about the content they produce meaning that all of the content they put out is guaranteed to be factually correct and be from a perspective of people who actually watch the movies and films that they include within their magazine.

Empire also offer companies the chance to have their own advertisements within the magazine as it would cost a business £4900 to have a full page advertisement in their magazine and a Bound-in insert costing £50 per '000.

Empire has a different target audience in comparison to the target audience given to me in my set brief as Empire are aiming for a target audience who are primarily male and within an age range of 18-40 years old where as my age range is much more specific where I am targeting a 16-25 year old audience which means that my magazine will have to be much more specific as it will be directed at a much smaller age ranged target audience. Furthermore Empire are aiming at a university educated audience where as mine is just a media literate audience which could influence how i set out my magazine front cover as i may need to include much more simple content on the front rather than long pieces of text that may appeal more to an audience who are older and university educated.
