Completed NEA

Dear Moderator,

My name is Jake Sullivan. Welcome to my A Level Media Studies blog. This is a record of the work I have undertaken for the Making Media Non-examination Assessment (NEA) within the OCR H409 GCE A Level course in Media Studies.

I worked independently on Brief 3: Magazine and Online to produce the front covers and contents pages for the first two editions of a film magazine called Film Frenzy together with the magazine's accompanying website.

Research and Planning

Further down in my blog you will find evidence of my research and planning for this task.

Magazine Covers and Contents Pages

Magazine first edition cover and contents page

Magazine second edition and contents page

Magazine Website

The link to my website, which was created using Wix, can be found at the link below.

The magazine consists of a homepage and a single linked page which can be found through clicking on the 'Magazines' section, found at the top of the home page. This page can be accessed by clicking on

NEA Task 21 (Planning) : Photography Planning

 1. Who will you be using as your models for each photograph (bear in mind that your photographs need to show representation of two distinct social groups)

For my main front cover image on magazine edition 1 I will be casting Bradley Hillyer as the director of fast and furious X which would be suitable as he fits the demographic of the director as Bradley is white male.

I will also use Bradley as the actor for two more images being an image where he is in an interview and also the contents page image where he will be holding the front cover of the magazine. In both of these images he will be playing the same director, being Louis Leterrier.

For my second edition of my magazine I will be casting Bethany Sullivan as Beth Burton in 'Lost In Venice', by casting Bethany this will also allow me to show two different social groups within my different editions of my magazine. Ethan Beale will also be casted in my contents page as Will Poulter from Guardians Of The Galaxy.

2. What thought needs to be given to the following elements of mise-en-scene?

Location for my photography will be inside any room with white walls to generate an effect where it looks like the actor on my front cover is taking an interview. Any other photos can be taken where perhaps there is green background so outside with grass behind the actor,

Costume for my main photos will be smart clothing such as a suit to make sure that the interview that I am generating for my front cover looks formal.

Props for my photoshoot will include a chair to generate the interview effect and for my contents page photos i will need a front cover for my edition of the magazine printed and out into the hands of the model.

My actor's Body Language will be quite open in all of the photos to allow the message that within the interview the actor is open and honest with every question that they answer.

I will need quite bright Lighting for my photos on my front cover as this will allow me to make full use of the white background wall to make it look brighter. Furthermore, in the contents page photos i will have sunlight lighting on the actor to allow a good photo where the prop can be seen as well as the actor.

3. Who will be taking your photographs and what equipment will they use?

For my photography for my magazine I will be having photos taken by Ethan Beale who is a keen amateur photographer with a mobile phone camera from one of the newer phones. I will be having this combination of photographer and camera because this will allow me to capture higher quality photos for my front cover and contents pages than if i was to take the photos myself with a lower quality camera.

NEA Task 20 (Planning) : Website Homepage and Linked Page

The homepage of my magazine’s website includes lots of promotion for the magazine as it includes an image and some text about the latest edition as well as promotion directing the customer to the magazine’s social media pages. In addition to this i have also included a video thumbnail to an interview and conventions to a magazine website such as the links to other pages in my website.
The magazine page is quite similar to the home page with the same layout of the page as a whole but i have included promotion with the gallery of my magazine editions along with filling the extra space yet to be filled with magazine editions with links to interviews with features form previous magazine editions.

NEA Task 19 (Planning) : Contents Page

This contents page I will be using for inspiration for my magazine content pages because I like the design and layout of this particular example.

Issue 1 : Fast X edition contents page

Issue 2 : Transformers edition contents page

NEA Task 18 (Planning) : Mock Up of Cover 1 and 2

In order to create this mock up of my magazine's first edition I chose to use the director of the main cover line movie 'Fast X' sat down on a chair as i think that this gives off the idea that an interview might be taking place and by having other information on the main page and the contents page inside this will allow the readers to take action to find the feature article.

I have also included other conventional elements on my front cover such as a barcode and a puff stating that the magazine is new in order to encourage the readers to chose this magazine.

Other cover lines allows further interest in other subjects to be shown on the front cover.

I used mainly the same process by being conventional and keeping my theme with edition 2 of my magazine as I have used the same positioning for the barcode and puff however in this edition the feature article is about the main actor in the new transformers movie and i have chosen a low angled shot of the actor.

NEA Task 17 (Planning) : Covelines, Images and Page Furniture

Planning for my magazine front covers:

Main Coverline

Issue 1: Fast X : The Only X/10 Movie You Will See This Year

Big releases recently include Guardians of the galaxy 3 and Fast and Furious X.

Fast and Furious X suits my target audience more of 18-25 year olds with guardians of the galaxy potentially being aimed at a slightly younger target audience.

Issue 2: Lost In Venice : A Dennis Browne Movie

I have created this film to use on the front cover as the movie title suits my image that i will be using on the cover.

Other Coverlines

Issue 1: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, Dwayne Johnson interview, Behind the scenes of John Wick Chapter 4.

Issue 2: Indiana Jones, Steven Caple Jr, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 'From the arcade to the big screen'

Main Images

Issue 1: I will be casting Bradley Hillyer as Louis Leterrier (The director of fast X)

For the actual image of Bradley i am thinking an image of him sitting in a chair looking thoughtful with a direct gaze to the camera.

Issue 2: I will be casting Jeevan as Dennis Browne walking past the Venice house.

For this image i am thinking of using an image where he has a direct gaze to the camera with a low angle shot of him standing over the camera.

Page Furniture

The page furniture will be relatively similar for both of my front covers as both will include:

A puff stating that the magazine is new.

A Blacked out line at the bottom with my cover lines placed within them.

A barcode on both editions.

A quote from the main image model.

A strapline and a masthead for both editions.
